I hang my uniform in my locker, then yawn and stretch my muscles out. It’s been a long day, and I’ve still got a long night of surveillance ahead of me to look forward to. Blake jumped at the chance to help me. Apparently, they’ve got her working on crap cases down at the Bureau Field Office, and she’s dying of boredom.

I grab my bag and shut the locker door to find Boo Radley standing there, his hands in his jeans pockets, leaning against the next locker casually. A small smirk flickers across his lips as he regards me.

“Been a little more than a week since we last talked,” he starts. “A man might think you’re avoiding him and get his feelings hurt.”

“I never took you as an insecure man.”

He shrugs. “Nobody likes to ask a pretty girl on a date and be left twistin’ in the wind.”

“Is that what I am? A pretty girl you asked on a date?”

He chuckles. “Yeah, kinda,” he replies. “So? You’ve had enough time to think it over. I need a decision.”

I nod. “As much as I appreciate the opportunity, I’m going to have to pass.”

He stares at me like I’ve just sprouted a second head, and his expression darkens. He’s surprised and none too pleased.

“Come again?” he asks. “I don’t think I heard you right.”

“I think you did.”

Laughing to himself, he turns and leans back against the locker, staring up at the ceiling. I can see him making the quick calculations in his head, trying to determine what this means for him and his team. Finally, he pushes off the locker and turns to me. Radley is making a Herculean effort to keep his temper in check; he’s obviously not accustomed to hearing the word no.

“You are the first person to ever turn me down,” he tells me. “Do you know what it is you’re passin’ up here, son?”

“I do,” I reply. “And like I said, I appreciate the offer. It’s just not a good fit for me.”

“Uh huh,” he says and rubs his jawline, the stubble making a dry, scratchy sound. “And what exactly isn’t a good fit for you?”

Other than being a corrupt cop? The thought passes through my mind, but I have the good sense to pull it back before it spills out of my mouth. I’ve already pissed him off, and I’ve got no desire to push him any further. Besides, I’m going to bury him. All I need is the proof.

“I just don’t think I’m Strike Team material,” I offer.

“I say you are,” he snaps. “And that’s all that should matter.”

“And yet, it doesn’t.”

I turn to him, my own temper starting to flare. Even though he’s a few inches shorter than I am, he’s trying to stand close, trying to loom over me with his presence. As if that will make me back down and give in to him. But I don’t scare easy. People who think they can intimidate me into rolling over for them really irritate me.
